I FORGOT ABOUT RESOLUTION

High resolution test

This image is in no way meant to imply that I intend for my show to be done in a such a style, these are just tests after all, but in my quest for perfect brush settings, I forgot about image resolution, and that ol’ A4, 600 DPI page keeps coming back to haunt me. There is a fidelity, in that A4 page, which is around 7016×5262 pixels, (at least that’s the 4:3 equivalent) that I just can’t get at lower resolutions.

I also forgot about speed. Both speed, meaning how fast I draw a stroke, and the overall image resolution, have a profound effect on how “line smoothing,” or image stabilization works. Settings that work great on a lower resolution image, like 720P, the resolution most anime is mastered at, may be totally useless on that A4, 600 DPI page. You would feel like you have no control at the higher resolution. This makes sense because 720P is less than half the screen resolution of the iPad Pro, so you would be drawing at greater than 200% zoom. The A4, 600 DPI page is more than twice the screen resolution of the iPad, so the stabilization not only has to compensate for a shaky hand, but also the pixels which are skipped over because they are not displayed.

The laptop that died

On another note, I forgot to mention that the sound on my old and busted laptop died long before the system itself. Since then, I have been listening to music on the same iPad on which I am drawing. I can imagine that streaming and decoding lossless, Dolby Atmos music uses a lot of processing power. So does working on an A4, 600 DPI page. Doing them both at the same time can be problematic. The iPad can get really hot, and the music can occasionally pop and skip. I need another device if just to listen to music on while I draw.
